Discovering the Roots of the Oldest TCM School in Bay Area: The Academy of Chinese Culture and Health Sciences

Uncover the rich history and background of the oldest TCM school in Bay Area and how it became what it is today.

In the Bay Area, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has been practiced for centuries, and has become increasingly popular over the years. With the rise of alternative medicine, TCM has garnered a lot of attention as a holistic and natural approach to healing. In this article, we will explore the roots of the oldest TCM school in the Bay Area, the Academy of Chinese Culture and Health Sciences (ACCHS), and discover how it has become a cornerstone of the TCM community.

History of TCM in the Bay Area

TCM has been practiced in the Bay Area since the early 1900s, when Chinese immigrants began settling in San Francisco. At the time, TCM was not widely accepted in Western medicine, and practitioners faced significant challenges in gaining recognition and legitimacy. Despite these obstacles, TCM continued to thrive in the Bay Area, and eventually gained a following among people seeking alternative and natural treatments.

The Academy of Chinese Culture and Health Sciences (ACCHS)

The Academy of Chinese Culture and Health Sciences (ACCHS) was founded in 1982 and is the oldest TCM school in the Bay Area. The school was founded by a group of TCM practitioners who were passionate about spreading the knowledge and wisdom of TCM to a wider audience. Over the years, the school has become a respected institution in the TCM community, and has produced many skilled practitioners who have gone on to build successful practices of their own.

Roots of the Academy of Chinese Culture and Health Sciences

The roots of the Academy of Chinese Culture and Health Sciences can be traced back to the early days of TCM in San Francisco. Many of the founders of the school were students of the first generation of TCM practitioners who came to the Bay Area, and were inspired by their teachers’ dedication and passion for TCM.

The founders of the school were determined to create a community where TCM could thrive and flourish, and where students could learn from experienced practitioners. They began by offering classes and workshops in TCM, and gradually expanded their offerings to include a full curriculum in acupuncture and herbal medicine. As the school grew, it became a hub for TCM practitioners and enthusiasts in the Bay Area, and helped to establish TCM as a respected and legitimate form of medicine.

Today, the Academy of Chinese Culture and Health Sciences continues to be a leading institution in the TCM community, and has expanded its offerings to include a variety of programs and classes for students of all levels. Whether you are a beginner looking to learn the basics of TCM, or an experienced practitioner looking to deepen your knowledge and skills, the Academy of Chinese Culture and Health Sciences has something to offer.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the Academy of Chinese Culture and Health Sciences has a rich history and a deep connection to the roots of TCM in the Bay Area. It has played a crucial role in establishing TCM as a respected and legitimate form of medicine, and has produced many skilled practitioners who have gone on to make a difference in their communities. Whether you are a student of TCM, or simply interested in learning more about this ancient form of medicine, the Academy of Chinese Culture and Health Sciences is an excellent place to start.

Student Help Desk

ACCHS is pleased to announce the launch of the Student and Faculty Help Desk in Neo LMS.

In an effort to facilitate a speedy resolution to Student and Faculty questions, concerns, and issues, ACCHS is launching this new portal meant to be the primary means on the internet for Students and Faculty to communicate directly with ACCHS Admin. Submitting your query here will help ACCHS quickly respond to your request by the person who is best suited to respond.

We are all bogged down in email these days, and many concerns are not getting to the person they need to in a quick time-frame. Our aim with this new tool is to respond to all requests within 24 hours. Once you submit a request, please ensure you are subscribed to the request so that you will be notified when ACCHS administration has responded to you.

Please watch the above brief youtube tutorial video teaching how to use the new Student/Faculty Help Desk in Neo LMS.

Library Resources

ACCHS Students Faculty and Staff:

I have put many links up at:

https://opac.libraryworld.com/opacv4/home.php  they may be useful. The newest one is google books. They will provide some Chinese Medicine related books in whole or part.

I strongly suggest getting an Oakland Public Library card https://oaklandlibrary.org/using-library/library-cards  You will have access to many free databases that ACCHS can not afford.  In the meantime. I do have free access to GALE on the library website. I also made arrangements with Classical Chinese medicine and Natural Medicine database to provide remote access to you.  If you have not registered for Natural Medicine, please follow the directions and assume that you are signing up via an ACCHS library computer,

SF public Library has even more databases. https://sflib1.sfpl.org/selfreg but it looks like at this time this link is only available to residents of San Francisco.

Questions have came up about textbooks. Many textbooks may not be available electronically. Please let me know if there is something you are looking for and I can search to see if and how much we can obtain of a copy of it. Google Books is a great resource.

Please note that any ACCHS materials that you have out will continued to be renewed until shelter in place is lifted and you will not be charged any late fees.

I am available to help you via zoom and am working on a screencastify video to help you navigate resources. Please also view Library Orientation

I realize that COVID 19 and distance learning can’t replace the ACCHS library, but doing the best that I can. Contact me at bmorris@acchs.edu if i can be of further assistance.

Campus Update 05/01/20 /news/campus-update-050120/ Fri, 01 May 2020 02:32:54 +0000 /

Dear ACCHS Community,

I hope you all had a restful break and that this message finds you in good health.

We feel transparency and communication are key in supporting our many constituents. More than ever, we can all see the need for clear and up-to-date information to help everyone navigate these challenging times. We understand many are facing hardships, and many more will have to make hard choices in the days and weeks ahead. We hope to support you as well as we are able.

Let me first congratulate you on a successful spring trimester. Though challenging, we came together as a community to resolve many of the issues facing us. Thank you for your calm, resilience and understanding as we moved forward together. You, our administration, and most of all our dedicated instructors deserve a thundering round of applause for navigating the migration, instruction, and implementation of online teaching strategies. Though we may still encounter technical issues with online courses, I hope our community will continue to show our faculty the same gratitude and support in the coming term. These times are unprecedented and I have seen our community navigate them admirably well.

In health and community.

Student Virtual Townhall 4/10/20 /news/student-virtual-townhall/ /news/student-virtual-townhall/#respond Fri, 10 Apr 2020 19:59:01 +0000 /

The ACCHS Admin is dedicated to supporting all constituents during this time, and recognizes that there is an interconnectedness at play; how everyone is doing affects how everyone else is doing. We are developing guidelines and resources to help students and faculty navigate the distance learning experience, to minimize undue stress or disproportionate expectation on everyone. We understand that the present circumstances are disruptive to every member of the ACCHS Community, and that no one has an increased capacity, but rather the opposite is true. We are working hard to ensure that your student learning experience remains exceptional, and minimizes the challenges with online learning to the greatest extent possible.

Online / Distance Education Task Force
The ACCHS Admin have created a task force and brought in subject matter experts (Karin Parramore & Anthony Von der Muhll) to develop training for faculty to tackle the challenges of online learning. Class sessions will be broken up, so there can be activities such as pre-recorded lecture or readings, reflections on a given topic, etc. that have to be done before a face-to-face online session, and then specific reflections or assignments completed after class. This can break up a 3-hour class into several components, only one of which must be fulfilled as face-to-face time. This can allow greater flexibility in managing your schedule, and reduce the toll of an 8-hour day in front of the computer.

Please click on the individual topics below the video to learn more about ACCHS position going into the Summer 2020 trimester along with responses to specific topics of interest brought forward by the student body.

Thank you!

Campus Update 3/16/2020 /news/campuus-update-031620/ Mon, 16 Mar 2020 19:54:17 +0000 /

Dear ACCHS Community,

In light of the “shelter in place” mandate that has gone into effect for Alameda, Marin, and San Mateo, San Francisco, Santa Clara, and Contra Costa counties, some modifications have been made to yesterday’s post regarding “access to the school.” With heavy hearts, by order of Alameda county officials, we are announcing that the Academy of Chinese Culture and Health Sciences will close its doors beginning on Tuesday, March 17, 2020. You may view the “shelter in place” order here – http://acphd.org/media/559658/health-officer-order-shelter-in-place-20200316.pdf.

The order maintains that residents of Alameda county shelter in place. “This Order shall become effective at 12:01a.m. on March 17, 2020 and will continue to be in effect until 11:59 p.m. on April 7, 2020, or until itis extended, rescinded, superseded, or amended in writing by the Health Officer.”

To the extent possible, and to maintain and facilitate distance education and normal student matriculation for the remainder of the spring trimester, some Academy administrators will be operating from the facility and/or remotely. The Empower portal will stay live and administrators in various departments will be answering emails and conducting school operations as needed. In short, we are still answering emails and assisting with normal school-related issues to the extent possible.

By now, you should have received some communication from your instructors regarding didactic course instruction and how migration to online mediums will unfold. For some courses that require hands-on practice, instructors may need to make-up class hours after the Order mandate is lifted.

The clinic’s admin is working with clinical supervisors as quickly as possible to incorporate a combination of clinical case studies and practical clinical hours that will need to be made up after the Order mandate is lifted and the clinic re-opens. We apologize for this disruption and will continue to work for you during these difficult times.

More importantly, please be sure that you are staying safe and keeping with any routine that maximizes the safety and well-being of you and your loved ones. We will continue to post updates as they unfold on the /covid-19 web page.

In health and community,
Andres Bella, Acting President

Dear ACCHS Community,

Our sincerest thanks to our community for your support of each other and the school during this challenging time. Administration is working hard to address this crisis and mitigate any potential risks to students or patients, while supporting you in the programs, clinic, and working to support our community. This is a time of difficult decisions and rapid change. Please bear with us as we work hard to make what we hope are the best choices, given the current information available.

*** Please pay attention to your email for communications with the school, and forward and disseminate communications to classmates and instructors if you think may not be receiving them

As of Sunday, March 15, there are 338 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in California. There are six reported deaths. Friday saw the first confirmed case among UC Berkeley student body. While testing is just starting to roll out across the state, models suggest that the actual number of cases is significantly higher but still in the beginning stages. While the relative quiet has led some to suggest that contagion is still low, leading public health officials are recommending everyone proceed as is transmissibility is a very real and likely possibility. We do know that rates of infection will increase in the weeks to come, and are working to take steps now to protect our community. This evening governor Newsom announced statewide  measures aimed at addressing this crisis (https://twitter.com/i/broadcasts/1vAxRBpALPaxl). Please watch this press conference to  familiarize yourself with the new policies and guidelines being implemented.

As we continue to monitor the current outbreak of COVID-19 via through the California Public Health Department and the Alameda County Public Health Department  websites  here  and here. While at the Academy (or when in the general public), please adhere to the guidelines set forth by the WHO and CDC

As a small institution we rely on our instructors, students and community to support academic programs and efforts. Please let us know if you have any other thoughts our questions.  Thank you and please be safe.

In health and community,
Andres Bella, Acting President
